The 3G version of the iPad has officially sold-out in many Apple stores across the country, with staff unaware as to when more stock would be arriving to meet the high levels of demand. This latest news comes on the very same day that Apple released sales figures showing that over two million iPads have been sold in the two months since the device was launched, bringing in around $US1.2 billion in revenue for the company.
According to The Australian newspaper, Apple’s George Street store in Sydney has only Wi-Fi enabled iPads remaining, having sold out of the Wi-Fi/3G enabled devices over the weekend. The newest Apple store in Bondi Junction has sold out of the 16GB and 32GB 3G iPads, with only the 64GB version remaining in stock – Apple’s most expensive iPad that retails for $1049.
Apple has yet to reveal sales figures for Australia yet, with a number of authorised Apple resellers reporting low stock levels too.
“There was bigger demand than anticipated and I really don't know when we will have more stock. It has been the biggest couple of days we have had as a company and we have put on more staff and we probably could have used twice as many. Our Melbourne shop probably did one-third of its monthly turnover in one day," My Mac managing director Steve Bardel told The Australian.
Bardel told the newspaper that his stores sold about 1000 iPads in only two days, and workers saw many customers return to purchase accessories. The three My Mac stores across Melbourne and Sydney have run out of all 3G versions, and have very limited stock of the Wi-Fi models.
Meanwhile, authorised resellers Domayne, David Jones and JB Hi-Fi have reported low stock levels for some 3G models, with Wi-Fi versions still widely available. All said there had been no word received as to when more stock was expected to arrive.
